Hey fellow modelers-
The Resources page of the web site had some broken links- but they ought to be working now!

Dog Days of Summer

We did not have an official August club meeting due to lack of attendance. Why? Because of all the events happening at the close of the summer season: Nats, IRCHA, Champaign County Fair, the start of school next week, to name a few. We'll wait until the September meeting to discuss business.

In other association news, Mike Unger placed fifth among tough competitors in the AMA Nats Sportsman Helicopter competition. Read about it at: http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/080216.pdf

A few of us found time to come out to the field to enjoy the beautiful weather and great flying this weekend. Here is some video shot by association Secretary Rob Crawford using his new Vivitar camera mounted on the landing gear of his Flyzone scale Cub. The view is looking backward at the tail wheel. Not too shabby for a $40 camera.

Geotextile Runway Plans!

VP Mark Mowry checked with a supplier in Columbus about using geotextile (that's the technical term for landscaping fabric) for a runway, and here is the breakdown:

"The cost $1.45 per sq. yd. shipped for 2 rolls.  A roll is 15ft x 300ft = 500 sq yds = $725 per roll.  I have attached aerials that show coverage of 2 rolls of material, one at 60ft x 150ft and the other at 30ft x 300ft.  The cost of landscape staples and field prep would also need to be considered."

Links to the aerials are below. Questions and suggestions can be sent to flyurbana@gmail.com or asked on flying days at the field.

August Assoc. Meeting & Wednesday Flying

First of all, the August Association meeting is coming up next week- Wednesday August 6 at 6:00 PM. Be there or be square!

This evening was the weekly get-together at the field, and as usual we had a good time. The guys flew combat wings again. Usually, there's a lot of chaotic buzzing and zipping around as pilots attempt unsuccessfully to score a hit- but this time, there was a hit so hard we could hear the whack!

Guess who hit whom?
Mike Unger flew several practice runs with his Mostro 700 helicopter. He will be competing in the upcoming AMA Nats in Muncie, Indiana. Good Luck Mike- your flights are looking good!

And, something a bit different for the war bird crowd- an electric P-38 cruised over the field several times this evening. Dick correctly pointed out that P-38's are supposed to have landing gear (this one is a belly-lander), and that firing guns would have been cooler.

More pictures from tonight and other days can be found under the photos tab of the website. Last, but certainly not least, we welcomed another new member, Jim Landenburg to the Flying Association this evening.

If you are looking for a safe place to fly, and friendly people that share your interest in model aircraft, contact us by filling out the form on the JOIN tab of this web site, and we'll set you up with a membership.

Wednesday Flying

Fantastic weather for flying this evening and a good turnout for our weekly Wednesday club get together. A diverse variety of aircraft took to the air, including glow planes, a gasser, combat wings, electric trainers, and a glow-powered helicopter!

A Dry, Windy Sunday

A few of our members came out to the field today. The wind was gusting across the field, making landing an interesting feat, and the lack of rain and hot temperatures has turned the grass to a crispy brown. That's bad for the grass, but great for foam airplanes.

Summer is fading fast- get out and fly while you can!
